What is a Salt Pool

A saltwater pool is a swimming pool that uses a salt chlorinator system to sanitize the water. Instead of adding traditional chlorine directly to the pool, saltwater pools rely on a salt cell to convert salt into chlorine through a process called electrolysis. This produces a steady supply of chlorine to keep the water clean and safe for swimming. However, the chlorine levels in saltwater pools are typically lower than in traditional chlorine pools, resulting in water that feels softer and less irritating to the skin and eyes. Saltwater pools are known for their gentler, more natural feel and are often preferred for their lower maintenance requirements compared to traditional chlorine pools.

How Does it Work

A saltwater pool operates through a process called electrolysis, which harnesses the natural properties of salt to produce chlorine, the primary sanitizer that keeps the water clean and safe for swimming. Here's a step-by-step breakdown of how it works:

Adding Salt

The process begins by adding a specific amount of salt to the pool water. This salt is typically sodium chloride, which is the same type of salt found in table salt but at a much higher concentration.

Salt Cell

Inside the saltwater pool system, there is a device called a salt cell, also known as a salt chlorinator. This cell is installed in-line with the pool's filtration system and contains metal plates coated with a special coating, usually made of ruthenium or titanium.

Electrolysis

As the pool water passes through the salt cell, a low-voltage electrical current is applied to the metal plates. This electrical current causes a chemical reaction to occur, splitting the salt molecules (sodium chloride) into their component parts: sodium ions and chlorine gas.

Chlorine Production

The chlorine gas produced by the electrolysis process dissolves into the pool water, where it reacts with the water to form hypochlorous acid, a powerful sanitizer that effectively kills bacteria, algae, and other contaminants in the water.

Continuous Sanitization

The salt chlorinator continuously produces chlorine as long as the pool pump is running, ensuring a steady supply of sanitizer to keep the water clean and safe for swimming. Unlike traditional chlorine pools, where chlorine needs to be manually added and monitored, a saltwater pool automatically maintains the ideal chlorine level.

Salt Regeneration

As the chlorine in the pool water does its job of sanitizing the water, it eventually combines with other compounds to form salt molecules once again. This means that the salt in the pool water is constantly being regenerated, and only a small amount of salt needs to be added periodically to replace what is lost through splash-out, backwashing, or dilution from rainwater.

Benefits of a Salt Water Pool

Overall, a saltwater pool offers a more natural and gentle approach to water sanitation, with the added benefits of softer-feeling water and reduced reliance on traditional chlorine chemicals. It provides a comfortable and enjoyable swimming experience while requiring less maintenance compared to traditional chlorine pools.
